EFL Reading

• EFL   = English as a Foreign Language

• TEFL = Teaching English as a Foreign Language

• We believe - along with most proper language schools - that reading for pleasure is one of the best ways a student can improve their English. It increases vocabulary and teaches syntax, while at the same time giving a life-long love of quality literature.

• It also provides a great opportunity for writing practice, as the students can write a synopsis of the books they have read.

• Our library is not made of of old, tattered books that are scattered throughout the school in no particular order, that look like they were bought 2nd hand. They are not books that were written (often a very long time ago!) for American children, living in America, who are speaking and listening to English 24/7.

• Our library is made up of proper EFL graded readers mostly from the Penguin Graded Readers series. They are all new. We have literature, fiction, non-fiction, movies, history, adventure, mystery, and ghost stories, to name just a few. Something for everyone!

• Students should choose a book that is slightly too difficult for them, and look up the new words in a dictionary. They then write these words down in a special notebook, along with the Chinese, for easy review. A great way to learn new vocabulary!

• To help students find the correct level book for them, we will give them the Penguin Graded Readers Placement Test.

• Students are completely free to choose whatever book they think looks interesting. We are not a school where someone who does not read English books themselves, chooses a non-EFL book at random and then tries to make the whole class read the same book. As every student will have different tastes, this method a 100% guaranteed formula for making sure that the students never gain a life-long love of quality literature!

• Our library books are available to both students and parents, with a deposit of NT$500.
